two on a swingWhile it may be common knowledge that communication is an essential component of a healthy relationship, the importance of nonverbal communication in particular may not be as commonly known. Nonverbal communication is a more natural method of communication that we are unconsciously participating in even when we aren’t speaking. It can enhance our words and increase trust or work against our words and sow tension. Nonverbal communication takes many different forms, including facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye contact, touch, space, and voice—all of which can play different roles in a conversation, making it important to learn not only how to read the nonverbal cues of others but also our own.
